A specialist Hull engineering and manufacturing company, which has been in business for nearly 40 years, has been put into administration. Commercial Systems International, known as CSI, appointed joint administrators on May 13, according to a notice filed in The Gazette. James Ronald Alexander Lumb and Howard Smith, both of Interpath Advisory, have been appointed as joint administrators.

The long-established Yorkshire business worked on glazing, cladding, façade and structural projects across the UK. Founded in 1986, the company built a reputation for designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke façade systems. That means it helped create the outer skin of buildings - the glass, cladding, windows, doors, panels and steel structures that shape how a building looks, performs and stands up to the weather.

Its portfolio includes work across education, offices, residential schemes, retail, hotels, public buildings, transport-linked projects and public art. The business is often brought in early by architects and also works with in-house design, manufacturing and installation teams, supported by its own steel fabrication unit.

Among the projects listed by the company on its website were Hotel Indigo Manchester Victoria, Canada Waters, Television Centre, Stockport Exchange, Millennium View and more.

Another project, Grandview Media Towers, involved work for the engineering company Laing O'Rourke, with CSI saying it was engaged via the contractor to engineer, manufacture and install more than 20-metre-high structures for JCDecaux Airport UK digital displays.

Businesses like CSI occupy a highly specialist part of the construction supply chain. While architects may design the appearance of a building, façade engineers and manufacturers are often responsible for turning that vision into something that can be built safely, efficiently and to regulation. Their work affects energy performance, weather resistance, fire safety, acoustics, ventilation, daylight and the long-term durability of a building.
