A UK airport located in a popular city has issued a major warning to travellers ahead of the busy summer season. Inverness Airport could see flight disruptions for several weeks due to the ongoing staffing issues.

Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (Hial) said it was dealing with air‑traffic‑control problems that required it to schedule "temporary closures" of the service around flight timetables. The disruption affected several flights over the Bank Holiday weekend, and passengers were advised to check directly with their airlines for the most up‑to‑date information. Inverness Airport at Dalcross, which handles around one million passengers a year and connects to destinations including the Western Isles, Northern Isles, Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester and Amsterdam, was among the airports impacted.

The weekend’s arrivals also included contestants travelling to take part in the BBC’s upcoming The Celebrity Traitors series at Ardross Castle, north of Inverness. Hial has, however, declined to provide information on what is behind the staffing problems.

A spokesperson told BBC: "Staffing issues at Inverness Airport continue and will necessitate temporary closures over the coming weeks.

"We will try, wherever possible, to plan closures around our flight schedules - however this may not be possible and some flights may be affected."

They added: "We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause. Passengers should contact their airline directly for latest flight information."
