Tesco is set to open a new Express convenience store on the high street of a popular Essex seaside town after submitting plans for extended opening hours.

The supermarket giant has applied to Castle Point Council for a premises licence for 218 High Street, Canvey Island, with proposals to trade daily from 6am until midnight.

The application follows the recent approval of planning permission to transform a former car showroom at the prominent junction of High Street, Marcos Road and San Remo Road into a Tesco Express.

As part of the redevelopment, the existing building will be partially demolished and extended to create the new convenience store.

Tesco Express stores are designed for quick top-up shopping trips and typically stock around 3,000 everyday grocery and household products, rather than offering the full range found in larger supermarkets.

The development will also include 17 car parking spaces and three cycle spaces, with the new store expected to create around 10 full-time jobs.

Planning documents originally proposed opening hours of 7am to 11pm, but Tesco's latest premises licence application seeks permission to extend trading by an hour at both ends of the day, allowing customers to shop between 6am and midnight.

The application will now be considered by Castle Point Council as part of the licensing process.

Tesco Express stores are commonly located in high streets, residential neighbourhoods and petrol stations, offering shoppers convenient access to everyday essentials.

If approved, the new Canvey Island branch will add another supermarket option for local residents and visitors to the Essex coastal town while bringing new jobs and investment to the high street.
