If you've ever wondered how the royal residences maintain their immaculate, gleaming tiles, you might assume that it's thanks to high-end cleaning products or specialist treatments - but this isn't quite the case.

According to tile experts at Hyperion Tiles, royal staff swear by a humble 95p store cupboard essential to banish grime instantly - and no expensive chemicals or elbow grease are required.

Instead of opting for expensive products, royal cleaners are said to opt for using trusty white vinegar which can be purchased from supermarkets for as little as 95p.

Thanks to its acetic acid content, which helps down dirt, soap scum, and limescale while neutralising odours, white vinegar is one of the most powerful natural cleaning agents available.

The experts at Hyperion explained: "Vinegar’s acidic nature dissolves mineral deposits and cuts through grime without damaging tile surfaces, making it a safe yet powerful solution for ceramic, porcelain, and even natural stone tiles (when diluted correctly)."

The use of white vinegar was previously shared by ex-Royal housekeeper Barbara Allred, who told the Daily Mail that this beloved natural product is often used by royal cleaners for removing limescale from taps. 

Sharing her tips, Barbara said: "To remove limescale build-up on chrome taps, apply a paste of 2 tbsp salt and 1 tsp white distilled vinegar. Use a toothbrush or cotton bud to clean difficult areas, and a bottle brush to clean plugholes."

How to use white vinegar for grime-free tiles

Want to try this royal-approved cleaning hack? Follow these simple steps to restore your tiles to their former glory:

For general cleaning:

1. Start by mixing equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle.
2. Spray generously over the tiles and grout lines
3. Wait for about five to ten minutes for the grime to break down.
4. The wipe with a microfibre cloth or sponge, and rinse with water.

For tougher stains and grimy grout:

1. Sprinkle baking soda on the grimy area and then spray it with vinegar, allowing the mixture to fizz, as this reaction will help lift any stubborn dirt and stains.
2. Scrub gently with an old toothbrush or a grout brush.
3. Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry.

For extra shine:

1. Follow either of these cleaning methods by buffing the tiles with a dry microfibre cloth to enhance their natural shine.

While these methods will leave most tiles looking good as new, the experts warn: "While vinegar is safe for most tiles, avoid using it on natural stone surfaces like marble or limestone, as its acidity can cause etching. Instead, opt for a pH-neutral stone cleaner recommended by tile specialists."
