Prince Harry has been warned against returning to the UK after Princess Kate’s cancer diagnosis by an insider.

The Princess of Wales revealed yesterday that she had been diagnosed with cancer following her major abdominal surgery in January. She has been recovering since and is due to start preventative chemotherapy soon.

The Duke of Sussex came to the UK to see his father, King Charles, just before his cancer diagnosis was announced.

Biographer and historian Hugo Vickers has said that the Prince should not come back to the UK, saying it would be “very counterproductive”.

Harry and Meghan, who were not briefed in advance and reportedly learned it at the same time as the world, said in a statement: “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace."

Hugo Vickers said today that the message was “lovely” but that the California couple should stay in the US while Princess Kate recovers.

When asked if Kate's cancer diagnosis could lead to a repair of relations between Harry and William, he said: “Lets hope so."

The biographer and historian added: “I don't think that's on the cards at the moment to be honest. People ask if Prince Harry is going to come back and help them out, but I think that would be very counterproductive.

“There's an awful lot of things that have to happen before that is a possibility. I think that would just be a nasty distraction I think.”

Prince Harry is due to return to the UK in May for a service celebrating ten years of the Invictus Games - and a visit to see his brother and sister-in-law could be possible then.

The Princess of Wales finished her statement where she announced her diagnosis by asking for “time, space and privacy” for herself and her family while she completes treatment and makes a full recovery.

Kate said that she is grateful for her “fantastic medical team who have taken great care of (her)” and the “love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many”.

She added that she was “thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer” and urged them not to “lose faith or hope”.
