McDonald’s is making a major change to its UK menu next week, axing nearly all of its vegetarian options in a move that has sparked anger among meat-free customers.

The fast food giant has confirmed it will stop selling Veggie Dippers, Veggie Dipper Happy Meals, Spicy Veggie Wraps and the Vegetable Deluxe sandwich. The changes are set to come into force from February 3 and mean that just one plant-based option will remain on the core menu.

The only vegetarian and vegan item still available will be the McPlant Burger, which McDonald’s says continues to perform well with customers. The company has blamed poor sales for the decision to remove the rest of its meat-free range.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s said: “We’re always listening to our customers to help inform and evolve our menu. After reviewing feedback, alongside the sales data of our Veggie Dippers, it’s clear this product does not match the appeal of McPlant for our vegetarian customers.

“That’s why we’ve made the decision to remove them from the menu from February 3, as we focus on developing better vegetarian options that meet our high standards.”

They added: “While McPlant remains a firm fan favourite and will continue to be the go-to choice for our vegetarian and vegan customers, we recognise these changes may be disappointing for some.

“We are actively learning from other markets to understand which vegetarian and vegan options are proving most popular and exploring exciting new offerings that we know customers will love.”

Despite those assurances, the decision has left many vegetarians frustrated, with some accusing the chain of backtracking on its commitment to meat-free eating.

Customers have complained that removing multiple options leaves little choice for those who do not eat meat, particularly families relying on vegetarian Happy Meals.

It is understood that weak demand across much of McDonald’s vegetarian and vegan range ultimately led to the cuts. However, the company is not moving away from menu changes entirely. Alongside the removals, McDonald’s is set to bring back one of its most talked-about limited-edition items.

The Chicken Big Mac is expected to return, while a new side option, Pizza Mozzarella Dippers, is also due to be announced. The moves suggest McDonald’s is refocusing on products it believes will drive higher sales, even if that means disappointing some customers.

For now, vegetarians heading into McDonald’s next month will find a much slimmer menu, with the McPlant Burger standing alone as the chain’s sole meat-free main.
