Today marks National Fish and Chip Day, a cherished celebration dedicated to one of the UK’s most iconic and beloved comfort foods. With over 10,500 chippies spread across the country, according to the National Federation of Fish Friers, fish and chips are savoured by many across the UK, just as much by families relaxing on their sofas as by those enjoying the sea breeze at the coast. This year, the spotlight shines brightly on the very best fish and chip shops across the UK, as the 40 top-rated establishments for 2025 have been officially announced. Of these, 28 are located in England, including an impressive five in Yorkshire.

Scotland boasts nine of the finest fish and chip shops, with six of these premier chippies being located in Aberdeenshire alone. Meanwhile, Wales proudly features three outstanding fish and chip venues.

The prestigious Takeaway of the Year award went to Yarm Road Fish and Chips in Darlington, a family-run shop known for its perfectly crispy batter and tender fish.

Coming in second was The Fish Works in Largs, Scotland, celebrated for its fresh, locally sourced seafood and warm atmosphere with its fresh fish delivered every day from Peterhead Market, and whole langoustines caught each morning by local fisherman, Ian Wightman.

The third spot was claimed by Kellaway’s Fish and Chips in Truro, Cornwall, a family-run chippy that's been serving great food for over two decades, and is renowned for its traditional cooking methods and quality ingredients.
