The M25 reopened eight hours ahead of schedule, however, four more daytime closures are set to take place in the coming months.
A five-mile stretch between junctions 10 and 11 closed in both directions at 9pm on Friday and was due to open at around 6am on Monday. But, following works to demolish a bridge and install a huge gantry, it reopened just after 10pm on Sunday.
The National Highways South-East (NHSE) said on X, formerly Twitter: “We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone for your patience and following our travel advice.”
Drivers had been asked to not travel on the stretch over the weekend - and instead get jobs done at home.
And National Highways project lead Jonathan Wade said drivers had "taken on board our advice” which reduced traffic levels by more than 50 percent and that around half an hour had been added to journeys.
It was the first scheduled closure of all lanes on the motorway since it opened in 1986, with the ultimate aim being to widen the road.
