A British coffee shop has left customers heartbroken after announcing its imminent closure. Down to Earth Coffee shared its "painful" decision to shut after eight years of trading in a social media post earlier this month.

However, a note has already been pinned to its Hove cafe door confirming the shop is closed, while thanking customers for an "incredible eight years", reports The Sun. The East Sussex chain started life as a caravan at festivals, but after proving a hit among customers, it opened permanent cafes in the coastal towns of Hove and Kempston.

The owner explained online: "After many years, Down to Earth Coffee is closing its doors. What began as a simple idea became something far bigger — a place of warmth, routine, comfort, and connection for so many people, including me."

"Closing this chapter is painful, but I’m incredibly proud of what we built together and the community that grew around it," the post continued: "I truly believe we helped people — and for that, I’m proud of our crew."

Disappointed customers shared their sadness in the comments and reminisced about how the cafe had become a pillar of the community.

"So devastated to see you close," one customer responded. "We’ve lived here for 8 years and our friends and family from all over the world have come to know and love your place and request cinnamon/berry swirls whenever they visit!"

A second wrote: "Truly a heartbreaking day. I travel overseas just to get a cinnamon bun from you guys. I hope the future holds many amazing opportunities for you! Sad to see this place go."

A third said they were "so sad to hear this" while another added: "What an incredible community you have built!! That’s something to be proud of. Good luck for the next chapter."

The owner did not share the reasons behind the decision, but it comes as another blow to the high street when several chains are announcing closures, due to rising costs and lower footfall.

Retailers such as River Island, Poundland and major banks have all announced major cutbacks to their store estates.
