Britain's high streets have been dealt yet another blow as Halifax presses ahead with a ruthless cull of its physical branches. There are 56 Halifax branches set to close this year from today, June 16, 2026. The mass exodus of traditional banking and move towards digital services will mostly affect vulnerable residents, small business owners, and the elderly. Yet, the Lloyds Banking Group, which owns Halifax, continues to argue that footfall in physical stores has plummeted to unsustainable levels, pointing to an irreversible shift in how the nation manages its daily finances.

The group is also set to close 59 branches of its other bank, Lloyds, this year. Other banks are following similar steps. The consumer organisation Which? estimates that around 6,693 bank branches across the UK closed between January 2015 and January 2026, with major high street names including Santander, Barclays and NatWest all announcing significant closures in recent years.

The pivot to online banking means that familiar Halifax signs will soon be stripped from historic buildings up and down the country. If your local branch is on the hit list, you may soon be forced to travel miles just to deposit a cheque, seek face-to-face mortgage advice, or withdraw your pension.

Defending the strategy, a spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group told MoneyWeek: "With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, customers can now use any of our Lloyds or Halifax branches. Alongside other local banking options like our community bankers, the Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before."
