Balmoral Castle 'closed' as major announcement issued

Balmoral Castle has issued a major announcement today as Storm Amy continues to wreck havoc. In a new announcement on Saturday, it was confirmed that the castle and Balmoral estate will be closed to all visitors.

The statement read: “Due to Storm Amy, Balmoral will remain closed to the public today, Saturday, 4th October.” This announcement comes after the estate closed to the public earlier than usual on Friday, with visitors having to leave the site by 4pm. The decision has been made to keep members of the public as safe as possible.

Storm Amy arrived in Scotland yesterday, with a yellow weather warning having been put in force for the area on Friday.

The storm has resulted in high winds, with wind gusts reaching highs of around 60mph in the Balmoral area.

This has been accompanied by spells of heavy rain, which has made travelling in the area more dangerous.

The Met Office has warned that the storm may result in some damage to buildings, power cuts and injuries from flying debris.

People have also been advised that travel may be impacted, including road, rail, air and sea travel.

The storm is expected to ease overnight, with the warning in place until 11.59pm on Saturday.

This is not the first time Balmoral has been closed as a result of a storm, with the estate closing temporarily in August as a result of Storm Floris.
