Two people have been hospitalised after a crash between a motorcyclist and a heavy goods vehicle.
The A1(M) in County Durham is closed in both directions between J63 (Chester le Street) and J62 (Durham) due to the "serious collision", National Highways said.
The crash occurred at 4.50pm. Traffic caught within the closure was released by 7.45pm.
Durham Emergency services attended the scene.
National Highways traffic officers and service providers were are the scene and assisted with traffic management.
"Due to the nature of the incident and investigation works continuing, the closures are expected to remain in place throughout the night," National Highways said.

National Highways said road users travelling northbound are being diverted via local routes at J62.
Traffic may wish to exit at J61 and follow the below diversion route:
Exit at J61 and join the A688 southbound/westbound.
Continue until the A167 Thinford Roundabout near Spennymoor.
Turn right and join the A167 northbound and continue past Durham towards Chester-le-Street.
Re-join the A1(M) at J63.
