Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson come across as the "happiest divorce couple in the world," but is that really the case, opines royal biographer Andrew Lownie, which is the basis of his forthcoming book.

Daily Express US spoke exclusively with Lownie, who said: "This is a couple who got divorced within ten years of marriage, and yet, 30 years, 40 years later, and in effect, are still living together.”

He wonders "how did we get to this position?” and then goes one step further, pondering: "And, is that really the true position?"

There are a number of books about Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson as individuals, but there has yet to be a book about both of them and their courtship, says Mr Lownie.

He relies on first-person interviews to help tell the story, which may be a difficult feat because Andrew and Sarah have asked that no one speak to him.

Mr Lownie reached out to Fergie directly, and she did in fact respond to his inquiry, ultimately declining the invitation to contribute to the book and she’s asked those around her not to speak to him.

"I think that was the wrong decision by them, it would help them shape the narrative, if their friends would talk to me, as a result. The people talking to me aren’t necessarily very supportive of them and are much more critical."

Lownie talked about what to expect in the forthcoming book: "What I try to present in my books, as any biographer would, is as complete a picture as possible, both the good and the bad, so, I’m keen to hear both."

He shared how he gets the real story: "I’m reliant on people talking to me who are less close to them."

He’s working on the book now and predicts the story will begin with Andrew and Sarah's wedding, but in the meantime, he’s hoping to speak to people who knew Andrew and Sarah at the time.

Lownie says: "I’d love to hear from anyone who knew them, who has come across them, the more the voices I can have in the book.

"It’s not the kind of book that’s going to rely on archives, it’s going to rely on interviews — and they are telling people not to talk to me."
