Both the New Democrats and B.C. Conservatives are promising to extend the SkyTrain transit line into Newton in an attempt to sway support in vote-rich Surrey, B.C., just days before the Oct. 24 provincial election.

The campaigns issued news releases within minutes of each other Tuesday, promising to develop a SkyTrain extension along the King George Boulevard corridor.

NDP Leader David Eby says he has worked with Surrey’s mayor-elect Doug McCallum to get the SkyTrain to Langley and is committed to partnering again for the spur to Newton.

The Conservative Party says in a release that the Newton area of Surrey has been left at the back of the line for rapid transit for years.

It says when plans for light rail to Newton were scrapped in 2018, residents were told transit would come but eight years later they are still waiting.

Elections BC says the number of ballots cast in advance polls for the first three days is down about eight percent compared with the 2024 election, with about 440,000 votes cast from Friday to Sunday.

Early voting continues at hundreds of places across the province until 8 p.m. Wednesday ahead of final voting day on Saturday.

The ballots cast in advance so far represent about 12 percent of all registered voters.
