Australia will lend hundreds of millions of dollars to the nation’s largest shipbuilder for a massive new manufacturing warehouse.
Austal will receive $245 million to construct and fit out manufacturing facilities in the Australian Marine Complete, within Western Australia’s Henderson Defence Precinct near Perth.
The area is one of the nation’s two naval shipyards. It plays a crucial role for the Australian Defence sector and economy, as the government fights to find its place within a global shipbuilding boom.
The naval shipbuilding market is expected to grow 25 percent across the world in the next seven years.
Speaking at the precinct on Oct. 21, Industry Minister Tim Ayres said the funding would secure industrial capability at a critical time.
The commitment—which is the single biggest so far in the National Reconstruction Fund - builds on another $327 million from the pool that has been given to various defence-related projects.
The $15 billion fund provides zero-interest loans for Australian manufacturing.
It was established in 2022 on the back of an Albanese government election commitment to boost domestically made products, but has been criticised for bleeding taxpayer cash into unproductive projects.
Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy defended the announcement, saying it would create hundreds of jobs on top of the 1200 Austal already has in Australia.
“(It) demonstrates that the Albanese Labor government is working closely with our defence industry as trusted partners to deliver significant defence capabilities,” he said.
